Abstract

When the situation worsened in Chechnya in the mid-nineties, friends smuggled Barbara Gladysch (b. 1940), the founder of "Mothers for Peace," across the border. As an old woman in a headscarf and long skirt she sat in the backseat of the car, overlooked by Russian soldiers and Chechen militias. She has a note with her that makes it clear in Russian and Chechen: If she is kidnapped, there is no ransom. Barbara Gladysch carries money on her person: donations for the "Little Stars", the center for childrenĀ traumatized by war where they can play, learn and be able to process their experiences. Meanwhile, 23 "Little Stars" glow in devastated Grozny. The moving story of a courageous woman.
