Abstract

The 1918/1919 revolution is one of the most controversial events in recent German history. The causes and consequences are examined in this volume in the context of political, social, and economic change between the imperial era and the republic. The focus is on the dilemma of the democratic forces: the conversion of the state apparatus, the social and economic structure, which is still in the process of being implemented. In addition, the study deals with the possibilities of the reform potentials of the workers 'and soldiers' councils that arose in the revolutionary upheaval. A further focal point is the political tenets of 1918/1919 in their importance for the stabilization of the first German democracy.
