Abstract

Ingmar Bergman's psychological and allegorical study of how humans react in a situation of war--the compromises they will make to survive. It takes place on the Swedish island of Gotland, where invasion forces arrive and a politically unaware couple attempts to flee. The film depicts a vague and fictitious war, but there are clear parallels to World War 2.
