Abstract

A lightly fictionalized portrayal of Ernest Hemingway's experiences as an American ambulance driver in Italy during World War I, and the romance which inspired him to write his 1929 novel A Farewell to Arms. A story of desperate love and imminent danger, it chronicles the relationship between the 19-year old Hemingway (1899-1961) and Agnes von Kurowsky (1892-1984), the medical aide who nursed him back to health after a devastating battlefield injury. The film is based on the book Hemingway in Love and War by Henry S. Villard and James Nagel.
