Flags of Our Fathers

A companion to Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima, this film focuses on the American soldiers who raised the flag on Iwo Jima during World War II and shatters the myths behind American iconography. After securing the island and fending off artillery from Mount Suribachi, five Marines and one Navy corpsman plant the American flag. Another group plants it again at the request of the Secretary of Navy, leading to the iconic photograph. Yet those who staked the flag are misidentified, leaving the three who survived the battle with guilt as they stump for a bond campaign back home.
