Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, this movie provides an allegorical tale of life under Stalin in the Soviet Union after World War II. A poor, migrant war-widow and her son meet a dashing man masquerading as an army officer. The three form a make-shift family, but the happiness of the mother and son soon falters when the new father displays cruelty and neglect.
