Although the First World War was directed by men, women played a role in the wartime everyday as well as in war propaganda that hardly can be overestimated. From a comparative European perspective, this book investigates the pertinent gender-specific cliches in pictorial postcards, one of the then often-used media for propaganda and mass communication. This study thus makes an original contribution to the gender history and political iconography of the First World War.
