Abstract

Between 1914 and 1918, illustrated press was by far the most important pictorial medium, which also played a central role in the war propaganda - alongside film, posters, the caricature, etc. Up to now, photo research has hardly concerned itself with the subject, but has often taken individual illustrations without paying more attention to the original development and publication context. The internationally renowned photo-historian Ulrich Keller has analyzed the history, production and functioning of the media imagery in the First World War in his long-term research work. In this comprehensive thematic book, he presents the quintessence of his research in two comprehensive, richly illustrated essays. The booklet thus makes an important contribution to the research of press and image propaganda in the First World War.
