Abstract

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (born 1938) was the first female president of Liberia, sworn into office in 2006. In her memoir, Sirleaf shares the story of her rise to power, including her childhood and her experiences with abuse, imprisonment, and exile. She recounts her studies in the United States, her work as an international bank executive, and her campaigns in some of Liberia's most war-torn villages. An outspoken political and social reformer who fought the oppression of dictators and championed social change, this memoir focuses on her life from 1938 to 2006 and calls women to pursue leadership roles at the highest levels of power.
