Abstract

Were women victims or perpetrators of the Nazi system? Since the beginning of the 1970s, German women's studies have dealt with this question so controversially in the context of the general reappraisal of the Nazi past that there was even talk of a "female historians' dispute" (Historikerinnenstreit). Only hesitantly in the course of this discourse were unpleasant truths spoken, blind spots illuminated, and the desire for an "undamaged female identity" buried. The present work by Christina Herkommer not only traces the debate on the role of women in National Socialism, but above all places this debate in the context of feminist theorizing and general historiography.
