The Soldiers of Pancho Villa examines the role of women and shifting ideas of gender during the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920). Refugio "La Cucaracha", a sexually liberated, hard drinking soldier, and Isabel, a devout Catholic and wife, experience personal transformations through their experiences as guerreras, or female warriors, in the war. This lavish production with two of Mexico's most popular actresses of the time marked a new era in Mexican cinema.
