Abstract

This dissertation focuses on the victories of the French armies of Louis XIV in Germany from 1668 to 1715. In particular, it explores the relationship between the French army and the local German people, a population which spoke another language and had different allegiances. The thesis explores seventeenth-century French army and state and the striking, but little known practice of levying contributions in contemporary warfare.
