Abstract

This article, historiographical in nature, describes the process by which military and society became interrelated in eighteenth century Prussia, Germany. It explores the concept of social militarization, its impact on political and social institutions, and the importance of the army to Prussia's emergence as a European power. Peter H. Wilson asserts that the traditional historiography, which relies on the concept of social militarization, overemphasizes factors such as Prussia’s uniqueness, particularly focusing too much on military recruitment.
