Abstract

The memoir of a French heroine who served openly as a woman for over twenty years in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. The daughter of a minor noblewoman, she was recruited somewhat haphazardly to the side of the Revolution. She quickly learned the use of sword, firearm, and horse, and fought with distinction in numerous battles, earning the nickname Sans-Gêne ("untroubled" or "unconcerned") for her calm and clarity of mind in the face of danger.
