Abstract

In the age of the first world war, music had numerous functions: it was a part of propaganda, an instrument of occupation and a strategy of resistance. Pieces of music were heard to conquer the enemy's heads and hearts, others were cursed and terrorized. The contributions in this book illuminate the musical life under German occupation in the First and Second World Wars and in occupied Germany after 1945. The dialogue of music and history, as well as the history of military and emotions, gives new insights into the continuation of the war with musical means.
