Abstract

Michael Jeismann's research focuses on the stereotype of Germans as "barbarians" at the start of World War I and how the French saw the war as a "holy war of civilization against barbarism." However, Germany too held preconceptions about the French, namely their view of the French being feminine and being the actual "barbariasn." This book goes on to examine the role of language in the construction of self image and national identity by looking at parallel developments in France and Germany and how both nation states used the concept of "the enemy" to deliniate themselves from others.
