Abstract

This book chapter discusses the relation between the growing number of professionally trained Red Cross nurses of the German Red Cross in the decades before the First World War (1914-1918) and their male counterparts, Red Coss samaritans. Their relations were  full of tensions, because the men feared the competion of the often better trained nurses of whom many came from better of middle- and upper-class families, different than the samaritans. Thus gender and class were interconnected in their conflicts.
