This is the first comprehensive cultural  history of the German military from the early modern period to the present. It offers an overview of continuities and changes in the thinking of German soldiers. A special focus is on a comparison of the mentality of the Nazi Wehrmacht and the West German Bundeswehr. The National People's Army of East Germany is described as well as the Prussian military, without which an understanding of military thinking in the 20th century would not be possible.
