Abstract

The first of director Vsevolod Pudovkin's "revolutionary trilogy," Mother explores a working-class woman's political awakening during the Russian Revolution of 1905. After her husband dies during a labor strike, Pelageya denounces communism to which her son adheres. Tsarist forces arrest her son. During her visits to him in a prison labor camp, she joins the revolutionaries' cause.
