Abstract

Through home movies, old newsreels, letters and fictional reconstruction of imprisonment, this film examines the life of the filmmaker's father, Marof Achkar (1930-1971), a diplomat under the Sékou Touré regime, who later disappeared in the notorious Camp Boiro, a Guinean concentration camp. This film reevaluates the turbulent decade of African independence and discusses its relevance to the new political order on the continent. Allah Tantou is the first African film to confront the personal and political costs of human rights abuses on the African continent.
