The Last King of Scotland presents the life of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin (1925–2003) through the eyes of his (fictitious) personal physician. Nicholas Garrigan, a young Scottish doctor, arrives in Uganda in the early 1970s to work at a clinic run by missionaries. After Garrigan treats Amin after an accident, he become close with the dictator and works to modernize the nation's healthcare systems. He loses his youthful idealism to decadence, corruption, and betrayal.
