Abstract

This German monograph analyses the  letters  German soldiers sent from the battle front to the home front during World War I and their use in the contested construction of public war experiences and  memories during the war and in the postwar period. The first part  explores the  war correspondence in a military context, including the  mood monitoring and censorship by the military and state. The second part studies  war correspondence as a medium of reported and published eye-wittness  experiences in the  public of the war period. The third part examines field post letters as medium of published eyewitness accounts on the First World War in the interwar period, which contributed to the contested construction of the war memories.
