Abstract

Der Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten (The Steel Helmet, League of Front-line Soldiers), commonly known as Der Stahlhelm, was a German First World War veteran's organisation that existed from 1918 to 1935. It was part of the "Black Reichswehr"  and operated especially during the last years of the Weimar Republic (1919-1933)  as the paramilitary wing of the national-conservative German National Peoples Party (DNVP), placed at party gatherings in the position of armed security guards (Saalschutz). This monograph studies the history of Der Stahlhelm from its founding at the end of the First World War to Nazi Germany.
