Abstract

Between the years 1900 to 1920, life changed dramatically for many women in the United States. Growing numbers of women were employed outside the home, especially during World War I. There were breakthroughs for women in the fields of sports, music, business, and the arts. It was also a period of social concern, when some courageous women led campaigns to make a difference to others’ lives. This book concentrates on key areas of women’s lives, such as their role in the family and the workplace. It looks at the part some women played in World War I and traces the struggle of the suffragists to win the right to vote. It also follows the many campaigns for social reform organized by women such as Jane Addams, Margaret Sanger, and Ida Wells-Barnett.
