Abstract

This pioneering study deals with the creation, outfitting, and preparation for battle of the Eastern Legions between 1941 and 1943 that included Tatars, Caucasians, and Volga Finns in the German Armed Forces. They were a large part of the foreign volunteers and conscripts in the Wehrmacht. Many were former Soviet personnel, recruited from prisoner-of-war camps. Osttruppen were frequently stationed away from front lines and used for coastal defence or rear-area activities, such as security operations, thus freeing up regular German forces for front-line service. One major theme of the study are the German propaganda efforts within the legions. The Germans soon realized that because of the effects of the Soviet propaganda simple-minded  anti-Bolshevik propaganda would be useless. They therefore concentrated on three themes: the supression of Muslim religion, the superior standard of living inside Germany, and national self-determination.
