Abstract

This mongraph explores the history of the  Reichsbanner Schwarz Rot Gold (Black, Red, Gold Banner of the  Reich) as the most important democratic paramilitary organisation of the Weimar Republic. It was formed by members of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD),  the catholic German Center Party (Zentrum) and the liberal German Democratic Party (DDP) in February 1924. Its goal was to defend  the parliamentary democracy of the Weimar Republic against extremism and terrorism from the left and right, to teach the population to respect the new Republic and its constituion, and  to honor its  flag, which derived from the flag of Germany from 1848. The colors black, red and gold were  associated with liberal parliamentary democracy and gacve this paramilitary organization its name.
