Armies and Societies in Europe, 1494-1789

A landmark publication in military history, and especially the 'war and society' subfield, this book is the first concise, comparative study of the varying relationships between militaries and societies in early modern Europe. The author pays careful attention to the differences in this relationship between developing nation-states, but his overall thesis is one of similarity: he argues that through the eighteenth century, military and civilian life became increasingly distinct and separate.
