Final Assignment

Final Assignment is a 1980 Canadian thriller drama film about the late Cold War. Sparks fly between Nicole (Geneviève Bujold), a Western journalist on assignment in the Soviet Union, and government liaison Lyosha (Michael York), who has been shadowing Nicole during her visit. Without Lyosha's awareness, Nicole tries to smuggle out a young girl who desperately needs a medical procedure, enlisting the help of wealthy Zak (Burgess Meredith). She also discovers that children are being subjected to experiments that would draw the ire of the world -- if she can get the facts out.
