Abstract

The article reports on the role of of two farmhouses belonging to widows in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania that served as headquarters for both armies during the U.S. Civil War, commenting especially on the damage done to them during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. The role of widows Lydia Leister and Mary Thompson, whose homes housed armies of the Union and Confederate sides respectively, is examined.
