Based on a book by John le Carré published in 1989, this spy thriller explores shifting alliances in the late Cold War. After receiving an unsolicited manuscript documenting the weakness of Soviet nuclear capabilities, a British book publisher, portrayed by Sean Connery, agrees to work with MI5 and CIA. His passion for a Russian book editor, portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer, threatens to derail his mission to uncover the validity of the manuscript. It was filmed on location in the Soviet Union, the second American motion picture to do so before its dissolution in 1991.
