Abstract

The outbreak of the First World War marked not only a political and social, but also a cultural upheaval for European societies. Traditions and innovation movements intermeshed, contradicted and overlaid. This was especially true of women, whose social position was upgraded by their work on the so-called home front. At the same time, however, they should do justice to the outdated feminine ideal of the prewar period. In numerous journalistic phenomena this paradoxical role of the woman in the world war was negotiated. This volume is the first to examine how this has happened in popular literature. Using examples from the war literature of, for and about women, he focuses on female authorship, stereotypical representations of gender and literary behavioral patterns. [publisher]
