Abstract

Cultural and everyday history of Hamburg at the time of the early Enlightenment have been little researched. Birgit Kiupel’s studies of the librettos of the Hamburg Gänsemarkt opera are based on references between the opera texts, the personal constellations that are staged on stage, and the reality of life in the various stalls, of men and women Women in Hamburg around 1700 asks. At the same time, however, she herself, with her creative questions about contemporary aspects of reality in operas, makes an extraordinarily impressive contribution to filling these research gaps. The source material, which the author evaluates beyond the libretti, is impressively broad and varied. The subject of the investigation is more than three hundred textbooks of the Gänsemarkt opera, which were handed down by fortuitous coincidence: great operas, but also pats and interludes as break pleasures of the audience at that time.
