This pathbreaking German monograph explores the social and everyday life history of German soldiers  in the mercenary armies of the 16th and 17th century in North-West Germany in the camps, on the march and during the battles. It also studies the history of the female and male camp followers  in the large trains of the mercenary armies, which reached a size that equaled them of the armies.  This is one of the first detailed studies bases on archival sources.
