Für Humanität in Krieg und Frieden: Das Internationale Rote Kreuz, 1863-1977

The German monograph "For Humanity in War and Peace: The International Red Cross, 1863-1977" explores the history of the International Committe of the  Red Cross from its beginnings until the 1970 and provides a concise overview. it emphasizes that the ICRC never was intended as a pacifist project, but as purely humanitarian. The main intention of its founders  was not to prevent war, but to help the wounded and sick soldiers of all  parties involved in a conflict with better care and make sure that all military and later also civilian victims of war are treated with equal care. Therefore the ICRC emphasized since its foundation the principle of neutrality, even so in practice many of its national members organizations ignored this principle, when they themselves were involved in conflicts.
