Abstract

The article examines the causes of German American mobilization during the U.S. Civil War and the significance of gender in that mobilization. It discusses gender as a force in social power relations, masculine and feminine roles in German culture, and the role of gender in constructing social differences between German Americans and natives. It also discusses the concepts of patriotism, principle, and honor as motivating factors in German American participation in the U.S. Civil War. (Publisher)
