The Americans presents a measured analysis of late Cold War international politics through its focus on marriage, family, and personal relationships. In the 1980s, Elizabeth and Philip Jennings are Soviet spies living as Americans in suburban Washington, D.C. After twenty years, she remains deeply committed to the Soviet Union while his loyalty frays under the moral weight of his actions, nuanced understanding of America, and dedication to his family. Stan Beeman, an FBI counterintelligence agent, lives next door to the Jennings. His relationships with Soviet KGB officers and pursuit of Directorate S officers comes at a cost to his family and his moral and ethical principles.
