Abstract

Despite their constitutional equality, women in the Weimar Republic remained significantly disadvantaged in the economy, society, and in politics. In order to achieve their economic, social, and political equality, they had to work for it themselves. In the 1920s, a relatively large number of working women were among the women who fought for their own interests and rights. What motivated them to become socially active? How did their working and living conditions shape the possibilities and forms of their social action? How did economic, social, and political reforms influence their scope for action? How did their lives and their self-understanding differ from that of their mothers in the German Empire? The book examines these questions by focusing on the social-democratic milieus in Hamburg and comparing it with the German Reich. In addition to the evaluation of numerous written and pictorial sources, working women were interviewed. The book convincingly combines social, political and everyday history and is written from a gender perspective.
