Abstract

Not only men lived in the social environment of the Prussian army of the 18th century. Well over half of all members of the so-called garrison society of Prussia were wives, soldier's lovers, illegitimate partners and children of soldiers. On the basis of new source material, the author asks about the very different living conditions of Prussian soldiers' wives. Many of them lived with their families below the subsistence level, others were rich house owners and enjoyed civil rights. In order to avoid social tensions, the Prussian state had to find ways to integrate and provide for the women and children of the garrison society, which in the end was only partially successful.
