Abstract

Stark provides an in-depth historical study of the women who were aboard ships in Great Britain's Royal Navy in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This work uncovers the stories of these women, from the wives and female guests of commissioned officers who lived (and fought) on board, to prostitutes (unoficially condoned by the Royal Navy), and women in male disguise who served as seamen or marines.
