Abstract

During the Spanish Civil War Republicans, loyal to the left-leaning Popular Front government of the Second Spanish Republic, were fought by the Nationalists, who were an alliance of Falangists, monarchists, conservatives, and traditionalists led by General Francisco Franco. This article explores the role that masculinity played in the Francoist propaganda, which combined nationalist rhetoric with ideas of masculine Catholicism, especially the symbolic images of the crusader and the martyr. It also analyzes the men who played a key role in the Francoist movement. It shows how crucial ideas of masculinity were in the Francoist propaganda.
