Desertion was the norm in the armies of the 18th century and occasionally even occurred en masse. So far, this has been explained across the board with the forced recruitment or with moral deficiencies of the recruits, but has hardly been researched. After all, weren't the armies the great engines of the general discipline that they were always believed to be? What did desertion mean at a time when many princes were mobilizing more and more people for their wars? These questions are the focus of the study, which, in the sense of a "New Military History", sheds light on the structural problems and contradictions of the army in the area of ​​tension between the princely state and the population.
