Abstract

This brief ethnography chronicles the forms of resilence mobilized by the women who were victims of the Ivorian Civil War in the face of basic problems of ordinary life: housing, food, and children’s education. While ministries and specialized NGOs dedicated to victims were created, they did not result in any long-term support for female victims of the civil war, and many women felt unseen by these organizations, who used them to distribute aid unevenly among different parts of the state. This volume shows how, far from being resigned, these women of Abidjan multiplied strategies to cope, becoming active parts of the Ivorian economy despite feeling detached and overlooked by the state.
