In North Macedonia, Kosovo, Bosnia, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, female victims of war have lost men close to them: husbands, fathers, sons, and friends. Some died, others “disappeared.” In the course of eight months between September 1999 and May 2000, the author met these women, many of whom have suffered abuse, including rapes and loss of property.
