Abstract

This book tells about the Great War of the Lower Alps: on the frontlines, the living and death conditions of the soldiers; behind the scenes, the mobilization of the bodies and minds of women, old people, schoolchildren, refugees, foreigners, and German prisoners of war. This book reveals the terrible human toll the Great War took on the population of the Lower Alps region. Lower Alpine blood flowed in abundance on the battlefields of the Great War. Haute Provence suffered even more than other areas such that the armistice of November 11, 1918 was a victory more for its dead than the few who survived. Today, only war memorials remind us of the remains of a vanished world. This publication constitutes the synthesis of the project of the Departmental Archives of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence which was carried out from 2014 to 2018 as part of the centenary of the Great War in the form of exhibitions, publications, conferences, educational actions, and cultural projects.
