Abstract

Usually forgotten in history, women are even more so when it comes to wars. Yet their role was essential during the Second World War. Indeed, what could Great Britain, the United States and the USSR have done without the contribution of their female citizens? All countries involved in the war  --  including Italy, Germany and Japan --  mobilized women. Based on a very rich source base, this book is the first major French synthesis on the history of women who participated, lived and fought during this conflict. Tracing their actions, from the domestic home to the front, through the factories, this book, which gives a large place to the portrait of unknown or famous women, mothers, workers, nurses, resistance fighters, intends to pay them tribute and justice at the same time.
