In 2014, selected by the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for preservation for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." Spielberg won Best Oscar at the 1999 Academic Awards.

Wellman, William A. The Story of G.I. Joe. Ernie Pyle's Story of G.I. Joe. United States: United Artists, 1945.

Pyle covered the 34th and 36th Infantry Divisions during the Italian campaign. Pyle died while covering the Battle of Okinawa.

The uneven quality of the processing and multiple types of film stock reflected how war caused the collapse of the film  industry. Principal photograph began in January 1945.

Part of Roberto Rossellini's War trilogy. The first part of the trilogy followed by Paisan and Germany, Year Zero.
