Abstract | This work investigates the relationship between gender and national identity in the narrative written by Spanish authors during the Civil War (1936-1939). Using as theoretical framework the studies that relate the gender and the nation, texts of the rebels are compared (Ana Maria de Foronda, Concha Espina, Maria Rosa Urraca Pastor, Rafael Garcia Serrano and Jacinto Miquelarena) and the Republicans (Benjamin Jarnés, César Arconada, Ernestina de Champourcin, Antonio Sánchez Barbudo and Isidro Mendieta). In each chapter the construction of the nation is analyzed in relation to a figure of the war narratives: the mother, the bride, the nurse, the soldier and the enemy. The main argument of the book is that both sides shared a traditional conception of the functions assigned to men and women during the war. However, on certain occasions, the texts of the two ideologies blindly contradict the gender model of official discourse. (UNC-CH) |
