Abstract | This pathbreaking edited collection was in the 1990s on the cutting edge of the "new military history," with a focus on the intersections of military, war and gender from the 16th to the 19th century. The essays in this book, written by experts in the field of military history and the history of women, masculinity and gender, focus on three major themes: the visual and textual images and representations of gender, the military and war; the gendered economic, social and cultural practices of military and war; and the everyday history, the collective and individuals' experiences and memories of soldiers and civilians who participated and experienced the military and war. Central in the chapters are the gendered interactions between military and civil society, and gender and the military and war. |
