Abstract

Approximately 400.000 Soviet soldiers liberated Austria and Vienna in 1944/45. In the fall of 1945 the Soviet personal in Austria  was reduced to 180.000 to 200.000 people. This book chapter in the edited volume Die Rote Armee in Österreich: Sowjetische Besatzung 1945-1955. Beiträge (Austria: Soviet Occupation 1945-1955. Scholarly Contributions) explores the  everyday life of the population in Vienna under the Soviet occupation. This everyday life included living in a distroyed city, no food and fuel, a black market,  looting, petty crime, several small and large conflicts with the occupiers, experience of rape and violence, but after the horros of war also a lust  for life.
