Abstract

By the early seventeenth century the virtually all-male Spanish society of the Conquest had given way to one in which, in Lima at least, there were more women than men. The city of Lima in the seventeenth century is the geographical and chronological focus of this volume, which focuses on the part played in colonial Peruvian society by women of pure Spanish or mixed descent who represented Spanish society in the viceroyalty's urban centers.
